Crooked Lake Bar & Grill

Overview

The first time I pulled into Crooked Lake Bar & Grill, I was coming off a long drive through Steuben County, hungry in that specific way that only a lakeside stop can fix. Sitting right at 2340 W Orland Rd, Angola, IN 46703, United States, this place feels less like a stop on a map and more like a local ritual. You see trucks, boats on trailers, families piling out of SUVs, and regulars who already know what they’re ordering before they open the menu.

What stands out immediately is how relaxed everything feels. There’s no rush, no pretense, just good food and a view that makes you want to stay a while. On my first visit, the server explained how the kitchen works during peak hours, with orders rotating between grill stations to keep wait times down. That small detail matters, especially on summer weekends when the dining room fills up fast. It’s one of those behind-the-scenes processes you only notice when food arrives hot and exactly how you asked for it.

The menu leans into comfort food done right. Burgers are thick and juicy, wings come out crispy without being dry, and the fish sandwich tastes like it was made for a lakeside afternoon. I once watched a family at the next table split a basket of fried pickles, laughing and arguing over the last one, which pretty much sums up the vibe here. If you ask the staff for recommendations, they’ll usually point you toward local favorites rather than the most expensive item, which says a lot.

Reviews from regular diners often mention consistency, and that’s been my experience too. I’ve stopped in during quiet weekday lunches and packed holiday evenings, and the quality hasn’t slipped. According to general food safety guidance from organizations like the CDC and USDA, maintaining consistency in temperature control and prep is key in busy kitchens, and you can tell the team here takes that seriously. Plates come out clean, portions are solid, and everything tastes fresh.

One night, I chatted with a couple who drive in from out of town just for dinner. They told me they plan trips around places like this because it feels authentic, not manufactured. That lines up with what you hear in many local reviews, where people describe the atmosphere as best seat on the lake and the staff as friendly without being fake. Those phrases stick because they’re earned, not marketed.

From a practical standpoint, the location is easy to reach and hard to forget. Being right near the water adds something you can’t replicate indoors, especially when the weather cooperates. There’s a rhythm to the place: boats docking, servers balancing trays, music humming in the background. It all works together without feeling staged.

There are a few limitations worth mentioning. During peak season, wait times can stretch, and parking gets tight. The staff is upfront about it, though, and they’ll usually give you an honest estimate rather than rushing you. That transparency builds trust, and it’s one reason people keep coming back.

Overall, this is the kind of spot where expertise shows up quietly. The kitchen knows what it does well and sticks to it. The front of house understands the flow of locals and visitors alike. And the overall experience feels grounded in real people serving real food. If you’re browsing menus, scanning reviews, or just looking for a place that feels like it belongs exactly where it is, this lakeside bar and grill earns its reputation the old-fashioned way, one plate at a time.

Second time we have been here. The first time I forgot my review. Had pizza bullied your own. Super good! They make their own crust and sauce. Looking forward to the Cauliflower crust sometime. Very sweet bar tender Eliysia(?) Sorry if spelled or said wrong. Def worth trying this place out. Enjoyed our food and service-both times. Will be back!

My daughter is leaving for California in a few weeks, she lives in Michigan and wanted to take her Mama to dinner before she left and we both chose Crooked Lake Bar & Grill. Neither of us have been there before, I told the owner it was a special dinner and she did something very special for us which is really appreciated, let's just say the cheese cake is amazing!! We had Mozzarella cheese Triangles which were delicious a little pricy but were very good! We both ordered BBQ Burger which is made with a fresh burger patty not frozen, piled high with BBQ pork and thick bacon with a pretzel bun, wow!!! I think one of the top ten burgers I've ever had!! Pub fries yes they were great, Brussel sprouts YUM!! They even were able to make me a virgin Pina Colada! I will for sure be back!! The atmosphere was very cozy, the waitress Stella, also did an amazing job and was very friendly!! Thank you for making our special night great!!

Don’t let the outside fool you… This place has top quality food, and they are remodeling the inside so it will really be moderately upscale, suitable for this area. The menu offered a standard variety with several fish dishes, and burger varieties. I had a burger that was juicy and thick. It was so unlike those scrawny burgers that most of the fast food places are no serving. The service was spectacular! The music was comforting. Plenty of TVs. They’ll serve any drink you can think of. They also have pulled tabs for amusement and an ATM machine in case you need some cash. Downside is there’s only one restroom. Be sure to stop here. You won’t regret it.

WHOEVER MAKES THE RANCH AT THIS ESTABLISHMENT DESERVES A RAISE!! Stopped in for a chicken sandwich and could not have been happier. 1.) When I first walked in I was impressed by the layout of the bar and dining room it was exceptionally clean. 2.) The staff greeted me within my first few steps and I was helped by the most beautiful blue eyed woman I have ever laid eyes on. 3.) I had my order placed in five minutes and had my food within 15 minutes. I will be coming back to eat this sandwich and ranch at least 10 more times. If you haven’t tried this place yet I feel sorry for you.

A group of six of us ate there on a Monday night and the food was delicious. Everything from the cowboy steak to grilled Walleye was wonderful. The bartender made delicious lemon drop and espresso martinis. We enjoyed our server, Stella, and wish her well on her nursing career. See you all next year!!
